COSMIC SLEEP

Cosmic Sleep is a multi-sensory installation which engages touch, sound and smell. Covered under a ‘blanket’ of cooling/heating elements, you experience the journey of comet 67p/Churyumov-Gerasimenko travelling through our solar system. During this 4 minutes journey the visitor experiences the extreme temperature changes occurring in space travel from the outer regions till its close fly-by around our sun. The story of the comets journey is narrated accompanied by smell and sound. Cosmic sleep is part of the Thermocorp research project. This research focusses on the effect thermal stimulation of the body has on story immersion. It uses a specially developed ‘suit’ on which heat and cold patterns are projected using thermal pixels. These pixels change temperature in a split second from cold to warm and back. With more than 240 pixels ranging in size from 1 x 1 cm to 5 x 5 centimetre it uses the whole body as a medium.Temperature affects your mood stronger than other senses. Heat and cold can bring a strong pleasure or discomfort to the body. Duerinck is interested in how we can affect the body in order to strategically strengthen our experience and tell new sensory stories.
